Bud McMillion, pre-engineering instructor at Arkadelphia High School, recently visited the Arkadelphia Rotary Club to share more information about the school's Badger Idea Lab. Thanks to a generous donation from the Ross Foundation, the Makerspace -- with its specialized tools, software, and supplies -- is open to the public, free of charge, on Monday evenings from 6-9 p.m. McMillion shared how valuable it is for students to be able to share their expertise and be able to teach others what they are learning.

Christa Neal, executive director of the Percy and Donna Malone Child Safety Center recently visited the Arkadelphia Rotary Club to share more information about the center's mission and needs. In addition to monetary donations, Neal said the following material items are currently on the safety center's wish list if community members would like to contribute:
The Arkadelphia Rotary Club will meet at the municipal Water Treatment Plant, 1208 North 10th Street, for for its regular meeting on January 22. Utilities Manager Brenda Gills will provide an informational program and tour for Rotarians.
Gills is a product of the Arkadelphia Public School system, having graduated with honors from Arkadelphia High School and Henderson State University. She began working for Arkadelphia Water & Sewer Utilities in 1976 as a part-time clerk while still in school at Henderson. She has progressed through all phases of the department and was named Manager in July 2011. Gills will celebrate 40 years with the Utility in February 2016. She holds a Class 4 Water Treatment Operator License and a Class 4 Water Distribution License from the Arkansas Department of Health as well as a Class 3 Wastewater License from Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. She is actively involved in many professional organizations including the Arkansas Water Works & Water Environment Association and the Arkansas Water & Wastewater Manager’s Association serving on numerous committees and boards with those associations. Gills has been a member of Arkadelphia-Sunrise Rotary Club for five years. The Arkadelphia Water Treatment Plant was built in the early 1960’s. Major improvements in the form of additional filters were added in 2005. This plant provides water for the entire population of the City of Arkadelphia as well as four wholesale customers – the communities of Caddo Valley, River Valley, Country Water Association, and Gum Springs. Major improvements currently in the design phase will allow the system to produce an increased amount of water even more effectively. Gills will be joined by Dale Box, Treatment Superintendent, and David Long, Treatment Operator, to assist as facility tour guides. Ms. Rachel Silva, preservation outreach coordinator for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program has been invited to speak to the club. Rotarians and guests are invited to attend.

Each month, volunteers from area churches and service organizations volunteer to feed the hungry in our community. The next distribution date for the Ecumenical Food Pantry is July 21, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, so please sign up and help as your schedule allows. The Ecumenical Food Pantry is located at the First United Methodist Church, 107 N 9th Street in Arkadelphia. This is a great opportunity to put those "Service Above Self" shirts to use! 11 a.m. to noon: unload the truck (please bring a dollie)
-- 4 persons needed to unload 1 - 2:30 p.m.: set up the food for distribution (these people normally stay and distribute the food they set up) -- 3 persons for canned goods -- 3 persons for boxed goods/rice/beans and other dry goods -- 2 persons for meat -- 3 persons for milk and cheese -- 1 person to copy newsletter and invitations -- 1 person to organize volunteer sign-in and coffee station 2:30 - 2:45 p.m.: devotions for the volunteers 3 - 5:30 p.m.: distribute food -- 5 to 8 persons to act as food guides -- 3 persons for computer entry -- 2 to 3 persons to act as greeters David Bazzel, co-host of the 103.7 The Buzz "Show with No Name" spoke to the Arkadelphia Rotary Club on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Western Sizzlin. Bazzel spoke about his football and radio career and the many small ways that we all have to improve the lives of others. As a spokesperson for Western Sizzlin, Bazzel good-naturedly posed with his cardboard cut-out version, Arkadelphia, Rotary Club President Terry DeWitt, and Arkadelphia Western Sizzlin Owner Al Morvin following the meeting. A Florida high school all-state athlete in football, track, and weightlifting, David was recruited by such schools as Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Georgia, eventually signing with Lou Holtz and the Razorbacks. He was team captain, three year starter, and four year letterman at linebacker under Holtz & Ken Hatfield (1981-86), participating in four bowl games including a television MVP performance in the 1984 Liberty Bowl vs. Auburn & Bo Jackson. David played on the 1982 Arkansas defense that led the nation in scoring, was the team leader in tackles in 1984 and was defensive captain of the 1985 unit that set an all-time SWC record of allowing no rushing TD’s during the entire conference season. David also created the Frank Broyles Award, The Cliff Harris Award, The Battle of the Boot-UA vs LSU, The Little Rock Touchdown Club and UA Live Mascot Program-TUSK. Currently along with Tommy Smith, David is the co-host of the Show With No Name on 103.7 The Buzz.
